Great Things Happen After Dark!!

I'm really looking forward to this event at Clondalkin Library on Friday.
Funding for this event and others, was made via the Carnegie Trust and the project called the 'Library After Dark Writers Café' is aimed at offering a course of creative writing workshops covering a variety of forms and genres, and also, to offer writers a quiet space and some time to actually write.
Clondalkin library opens 'after hours' once a month on a Friday to facilitate the café, which is open to new and emerging writers.
To reserve your place for future events, please email: libraryafterdark@sdublincoco.ie with a sample of your creative writing.
At this month's cafe, I will be looking at how best to create pace in your novel, under the guise of 'Unleashing Your Dark Side: The Best Ways to Commit Fictional Crime'.
The Cafe is open from 6.30pm - 9.30pm when the Library is closed to the general public.

Want to Write or Finish that Crime Novel???

There are some great upcoming courses at the Irish Writers' Centre, but if you want to work on a crime novel, here is the blurb about the course I will be facilitating from the 5th February....

CRIME WRITING WORKSHOP at the IRISH WRITERS CENTRE with LOUISE PHILLIPS
Over 10 weeks, commencing the 5th February, this course will cover many elements of successful crime writing – creating tension, pace, memorable characters, effective dialogue, plot and a gripping page-turning story.
Workshop exercises and editorial critique will also sharpen your fictional voice, and as research is a huge component of crime writing – the course will look at how much, how little, and where do you go to find the answers you're looking for?
During the course, we will have visits from detectives who will take you step-by-step through crime scene evaluation and the gathering of forensic evidence.
Since commencing workshops, two of Louise’s students have achieved publishing deals and another two are signed with agents.
If you’re looking to start or finish your crime novel, this course will get you closer to the finish line.
Louise Phillips is the bestselling author of psychological crime thrillers, Red Ribbons, The Doll’s House (Winner of the Irish Crime Fiction Book of the Year) and Last Kiss.

Contact the Irish Writers Centre at 19 Parnell Square, Dublin 1.

The secret of becoming a writer....

"The secret of becoming a writer..., write, write and keep on writing," or in the words of Ernest Hemingway..."There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed."

It was the final session of the Write That Novel course in Carousel Creates last night, and it was a mighty session. Once again, there was a great group of writers coming together to explore areas of the craft. I may be biased, but I think writing brings out the best in people. It was certainly a pleasure for me to facilitate this lovely group.

Thank you all for being so enthusiastic, and for your lovely present and handmade card. I was really touched.

x

I thought it would take me an hour or two to put together.I mean I only had to amend some existing presentations

5 Hours later, I'm still working on it!!

Inspiring!!

The 'WRITE THAT NOVEL' workshop in Carousel Creates, kicked off last night, and this evening, I'm off to the Irish Writers Centre for the 'CRIME FICTION WORKSHOP'.

I haven't worked with so many writers at the one time before, (twenty four in total) but I have to say it is inspiring. Both groups are great, and I'm looking forward to my weekly visits away from the fictional world of novel number 4, which for now, fingers crossed, is bubbling away nicely!!

Finding the right words....

I love writing, yes, honestly, I do! There are times it can get me hot under the collar and all that, and there are times when not being able to find the right words really frustrates me, but by and large I'm glad I've chosen this sometimes crazy path.

Last night ended the 6 weeks writing workshop at Carousel Creates, and all ten participants were a pleasure to get to know and to be part of their writing journey....

I got all emotional when they presented me a hand crafted pen made from wood extracted from 5000 years of bog...I will be thinking of those 5000 years when I use it!

Their words inside the hand-made card by the lovely artist Patricia Gibney were also very touching, and I was especially delighted that Stephen King took time out of his busy schedule to sign it!!!
