#2014 Readwomen - Red Line Festival Civic Theatre Tallaght Friday 17th October

Are literary women writers undersold and undervalued by the current literary universe?

In 2014 a small American literary journal vowed to cover women writers for a full year. Then, artist Joanna Walsh’s #readwomen2014 project became a popular meme on social media.

As part of the RED LINE festival, you can join three Hennessy award winning writers, Valerie Sirr, Geraldine Mills and Eileen Casey in this lively debate as they assess and redress male writers’ dominance in the literary world. 

The event is facilitated by local writer Sue Hassett.

RED LINE BOOK FESTIVAL 14th - 19th October!!!

This festival has been going from strength to strength, and indeed, has been shortlisted in the 2014 Chambers of Ireland Award for Excellence in Local Government. It's a terrific festival with lots happening, so check out the full programme HERE 

Last year I took part in Lady Killers at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght with Alex Barclay, Arlene Hunt, Joanne Richardson and Susan Condon, and it was a great night.

The festival kicks off on Tuesday the 16th September with a pre-festival coffee morning, and I'm delighted to be a guest speaker at the event. I'll be talking about the importance of libraries and the literary and cultural vibrancy in South Dublin, along with a short reading from LAST KISS......

A killer evening not to be missed! Some of Ireland’s most popular female crime writers share insights into creating a gripping thriller. Special guest Joanne Richardson, former County Coroner of Boulder Colorado, brings an interesting element to the evening as she shares her experiences in this challenging role.

Alex Barclay’s first novel Darkhouse was a Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller. Since then Alex has written several bestselling thrillers and won the Ireland AM Crime Fiction Award at the Irish Book Awards for her third novel, Blood Runs Cold, which was the beginning of the Special Agent Ren Bryce series.

Arlene Hunt’s dark and atmospheric stories perfectly capture the grimy underworld of Dublin and beyond. She is the author of a series of fast-paced crime-thrillers, featuring John Kenny and Sarah Quigley from Quik Investigations. Her sixth novel Undertow was nominated for best crime novel of the year in 2009. Her current novel – a stand alone set in the US – entitled The Chosen, was voted as TV3′s Book of the Month for November 2011.

Louise Phillips’ bestselling debut crime novel, Red Ribbons, was shortlisted for Best Irish Crime Novel of the Year (2012) in the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards. Her eagerly awaited second psychological crime novel, The Doll’s House will be published August 2013

Joanne Richardson was County Coroner in Boulder Colorado from 2003 to 2012 and was responsible for determining cause and manner of death, which indicates whether the death was accidental, natural, suicide or homicide. Despite having what many would perceive to be a morbid profession, Richardson is upbeat, colourful and frank about her work.

Susan Condon is currently editing her debut novel – a crime fiction thriller set in New York City. Her writing career began in 2008. She has won many short story awards and was Longlisted in the RTE Guide / Penguin Ireland Short Story Competition 2012.

Whether you are a crime fiction reader or currently honing your skills as a crime fiction writer, this is an event not to be missed. An opportunity to delve into the minds of three prolific writers as they divulge the secrets (we hope!) to their success and how they manage to get into the minds of their characters: the victims and the killers . . .

At the end of the night, there will be a chance for you, the audience, to ask those burning questions that have been eating away at you. If you can’t make it on the night and that burning question will not go away, post it here. The most intriguing question will be asked, on your behalf, on the night.

RED LINE POETRY COMPETITION ANNOUNCED!!!

The Red Line Festival will take place from October 15th to 20th 2013, so keep the dates free in your diary!

Red Line Poetry Competition

The inaugural poetry competition is now open and accepting entries. 

First prize is €300, second prize is €200 and the third prize is €100. 

All shortlisted entrants will be invited to read their poems at an event in The Red Line Book Festival this October. 

The competition is open to everyone living on the island of Ireland, as long as the work is original and previously unpublished. There is no fee to enter. The maximum number of entries per person is 2. The closing date for entries is Friday 30th August 2013.

The Red Line Poetry Competition will be judged by the poet Alan Jude Moore.

Alan Jude Moore is from Dublin. He has published three poetry collections: Black State Cars (Salmon Poetry, 2004), Lost Republics (Salmon Poetry, 2004) and Strasbourg (Salmon Poetry, 2010). A new collection is due to be published later this year. His fiction has been shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award and his work has been translated into Italian, Russian and Turkish. He has read and performed at many events in Ireland and abroad, including Electric Picnic; the Dublin Book Festival; The Istanbul International Poetry Festival; The Henry Miller Memorial Library, California; Loyola University, Los Angeles; and the Nabokov Museum, St. Petersburg.He is the editor of the online literary magazine The Burning Bush 2 www.burningbush2 His website is: www.alanjudemoore.com
