Big Happy Smile on my face today to let you know that the utterly amazing, all round great guy, and friend, COLM HAYES will be launching THE HIDING GAME at THE GUTTER BOOKSHOP on the 10th September 2019 at 6.30 p.m.

Many of you will know Colm very well, but below is a small flavour of the man, with some fab questions via Radio Nova and a small intro…..

Q. Someone or something that strikes you as beautiful?

A. I’m an early bird, so the miracle of sunrise always gets me.It’s like we get re-invented every day.

Q. You’re on Death Row, what’s your last meal?

A. Chicken wing with blue cheese dressing from Elephant and Castle and chips.

Q. Which words do you overuse?

A. “Stay where you are”. I use it a lot on-air.

Q. The worst job you’ve ever done?

A. While in college I worked as a part-time grave digger.

Q. What keeps you awake at night?

A. The whispering voices of doubt and the stifled screams of lost opportunity. Well, you did ask!

Q. Your idea of hell on earth?

A. Trumpland, The Theme Park.

Q. What do some people think about you that isn’t true?

A. That I don’t care, but I do, I really do and that I’m French – which I’m not.

Colm Hayes, co-presents the Colm & Lucy show with Lucy Kennedy on Radio Nova weekdays 6am to 10am. He had a 10-year partnership with James ‘Jim-Jim’ Nugent on the FM104’s Strawberry Alarm Clock and on the 2fm breakfast show. He officially joined Radio Nova in 2017 as programme director.

Irish Crime Files!!

IRISH CRIME FICTION, by Brian Cliff which was recently published by Palgrave MacMillan, will have it's official launch in The Gutter Bookshop on the 25th July. It is not only a must for the diary, but the book is a must for writers and readers alike. This book represents the first in-depth study of Irish Crime Fiction and its progression from wider Irish literature into a unique genre of its own, and Brian Cliff offers readers the chance to explore Irish crime writing from a fresh perspective, as well as posing important considerations for further study.

I'm delighted that my work is included in this study. Here is a short quote - "Phillips's work reaches towards Irish family Gothic material, with a profound sense of tangled and interwoven lives.." and that's a lovely overview to read at any time.

The book examines the recent expansion of Ireland's literary tradition to include home-grown crime fiction, and it surveys the wave of books that use genre structures to explore specifically Irish issues such as the Troubles and the rise and fall of the Celtic Tiger, as well as Irish experiences of human trafficking, the supernatural, abortion, and civic corruption. These novels are as likely to address the national regulation of sexuality through institutions like the Magdalen Laundries as they are to follow serial killers through the American South or to trace international corporate conspiracies.

This study includes chapters on Northern Irish crime fiction, novels set in the Republic, women protagonists, and transnational themes, and discusses Irish authors’ adaptations of a well-loved genre and their effect on assumptions about the nature of Irish literature. It is a book for readers of crime fiction and Irish literature alike, illuminating the fertile intersections of the two. Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!!

After a day of whizzing around the city, there are now a zillion (well not quite) signed copies doted around the city....Easons O'Connell Street, Nassau St, St Stephen's Green, Blanchardstown, Swords, Liffey Valley, The Square and Dundrum, Dubray in Grafton Street,  Hodges Figgis in Dawson Street, WHS in Arnotts Henry Street and at the Airport!!! It was great to meet everyone, including the staff at Argosy Books!!

Publication Week!!

It will be a fun week ahead and for any of you going to the launch, I'm really looking forward to meeting you there!!! The response to LAST KISS has been great so far with some very strong reviews and also I've had the most tremendous feedback from friends/readers who seem to have swallowed it whole within a day or so!!!

Thanks also to Easons for picking it as a Book of the Month, and Bob in the Gutter Bookshop who gave The Doll's House a terrific launch last year, also to W H Smiths at the Airport for choosing to place it in the 'Book Everyone is Talking About'...and that's seems like a very good thing to me!!

Every Picture Tells A Story!

The launch in The Gutter Bookshop was an amazing night. I'll put some pictures below for you!

For everyone that made the launch on Wednesday, a HUGH thank you, and for anyone who wanted to be there but for whatever reason couldn't, including potential bus strike, LUAS not working with massive delays, not to mention the 3 hour tail back on the M50, I appreciate your support too! 

It was a great week, despite some of the challenges above. And having heard last Friday that many shops didn't get deliveries due to a fire in a depot, I thought the book would never arrive!! Thankfully, it's now in all shops barring a couple in Dublin, Reads of Nassau Street, and one shop at Dublin Airport. (They should get them today)

Anyone that knows me, knows I take these sort of challenges head on, so if any of you who had to miss the launch were planning on picking up a copy soon, IF YOU DO SO BY THIS SATURDAY EVENING, and send me a pic, you're in with a GREAT chance of winning a free copy for a gift!! I have lots and lots, so the odds of winning are pretty good.
